Priya Dutt's making a difference

Wednesday, March 14, 2018

Priya Dutt and husband Owen Roncon celebrated the 59th wedding anniversary of Priya’s parents Nargis and Sunil Dutt at a village school in Palghar. The Nargis Dutt Foundation, of which Priya is a trustee, has over the last two years empowered a school and its 200 students there with clean drinking water, toilets, a playground and music room as well as e-learning and computer labs -- in memory of Nargis, the legendary actress who died from cancer in 1981. Says Priya: “March 11 was a very special day because it was my parents’ anniversary and because I was with my husband and the kids of Borichapad Zilla Parishad School in Sonave village. It was the first rural school for which we have set up an empowerment model that we will now be replicating with two other schools in the region. Nobody knew about it until I put it up on Facebook but it was nevertheless very satisfying.” Priya, who’s a politician by profession, says that her personal mission lies in education, which she sees as the key to building a better life for the children of today: “You may have all the buildings in place but unless our children have the learning and the content, one cannot sustain the future,” says Priya who, along with the NDF, has also, in recent years, been taking computer training to the slums of Mumbai and has so far reached out to 30,000 underprivileged children. With the NDF celebrating 37 years of its existence, Priya is also carrying forward the legacy of her philanthropic parents, which must surely be immensely satisfying for her.

Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 20)A plain Jane day. Work goes on as usual, and there is progress. But as Ganesha says, it's an ordinary day. Hum, whistle, doodle, and sip your green tea. While day dreaming, start planning your dream home. After all, that's where the first plan takes shape.
