PadMan creates ripples

Friday, February 09, 2018

While PadMan, the film starring Akshay Kumar, which releases today, stresseson the sensitive topic of menstruation, there are women like singer Manasi Scott who are lauding the actor (and his wife producer Twinkle Khanna) for choosing such a ‘taboo’ subject, even before the film’s release. Writes Scott on her Facebook page (with a picture of herself posing with a sanitary pad): “I grew up in a household where chums and periods were commonly uttered words and my father bought me pads and we never covered up packets bought (as shopkeepers and buyers alike hastily do in India). My father grew up in a household where his mother had to sit out of the house during her periods and be fed without being touched or looked at. Here I am today holding a pad in my hand on social media and though this is absolutely normal for me, I hope it’s empowering for you girls who have had to live under the great ‘periods’ taboo.”  Meanwhile there’s another angle to the name PadMan that we bet you hadn’t thought of. Celebrity journalist Mark Manuel writes on Facebook that the title of PadMan suits filmstar Akshay Kumar. To quote Manuel: “It is a nickname that was given to Muhammad Ali by Elvis Presley in the 1970s. And then WWE legend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson gave it to himself recently. It suits Akshay superbly.”
