Narendra Modi's heartfelt interview

Friday, April 26, 2019

The social media has recently been full of video clips of actor Akshay Kumar interviewing PM Modi. In the videos Akshay appears sombre, restrained and respectful as he plays the role of interviewer, which does not happen often to the otherwise much-interviewed actor. In one of the clips Akshay asks Modi what he, as a child, wanted to grow up to be. Replies Modi: “I used to be fascinated by soldiers. There was an army station near my village and I would go along with the other children to watch the soldiers. They were very smart and purposeful and it struck me that one way to serve the country was to offer one’s life to the defence services. Then I encountered Swami Atmasthananda at the Ramakrishna Mission (who recently passed away at the age of 100). He used to be very fond of me and would guide me about life…I visited Kolkata and he sheltered me several times, even giving me the opportunity to visit the room that Swami Vivekananda used to once live in. Following that, I went to the world of the Himalayas…I had these different and varied experiences…I wandered and explored the world a lot, all by the ages of 18-22. I had hopes and wishes but I was also quite confused. There was not that much guidance forthcoming…I would ask questions to myself and would have to find my own answers. And thus, wandering incessantly…I found my way here (to politics).” Asked what films he has recently watched, Modi said: “I watched ‘Paa’ with Amitabh Bachchan and ‘A Wednesday’ with Anupam Kher when they came to Gujarat while I was CM. Now that I am PM, have not time to watch films.” And then Modi adds, for Akshay’s benefit, “But I did tell people within my circle to watch your film ‘Toilet – A Prem Katha’!”
