Mukta Arts celebrates four decades

Friday, October 12, 2018

Subhash Ghai and daughter Meghna Ghai Puri’s Mukta Arts will be celebrating 40 years on October 24. The film company produced some massive hits like Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan and Khalnayak during its heyday in the 1980s and 1990s before it went on to more classy ventures like Taal, Pardes and Black and White near the turn of the millennium. Today, Mukta Arts prides itself on educating film-makers, actors and technicians with its film institute Whistling Woods in the city as well as its work in the film exhibition sector. Says Meghna Ghai Puri: “Mukta Arts has a number of firsts to it credit. It was the first film company to insure a film with Taal. It was the first film company in our country to be listed on the stock exchange. And it was also the first film company to install ethical and professional mechanisms of business in the industry.” While the company, which aimed to bring transparency to the industry, launched several actors on the path to stardom – Jackie Shroff, Meenakshi Seshadri, Anil Kapoor etc – it has also launched at least two generations of film technicians and support crew. Choreographer Saroj Khan, for example, credits her illustrious career to Mukta Arts. Says Meghna: “Today we’re fully immersed in the task of film education. What bigger task could there be than training the people who make as well as participate in films, which is what Whistling Woods does? The institute is a culmination of all our experience in the film industry.” Asked what her vision is for the next 10 years, Meghna replies: “While we cannot predict the future we know that there will be more opportunities for young people and we will be there serving them with passion. So whether it is celluloid, the worldwide web, digital cinema or anything else we will continue to create entertainment options, making sure that we never ever compromise on the quality aspect.”
