MIs' celebration on Mumbai streets

Wednesday, May 15, 2019

The Mumbai Indians (MI) made the city’s heart beat a whole lot faster during the cliffhanger IPL finals last Sunday, which they conquered to lift the IPL Cup for 2019. With a record fourth title (and the second in which they won by just one run!) the MIs’ cup of joy overflowed onto the streets of Mumbai when they took an open-bus tour along Marine Drive on Monday, following their victory. The bus started off from Altamount Road (near the residence of team owners the Ambanis) and went upto the team hotel, Trident, at Nariman Point. The MIs had invited their admirers to be a part of the parade, a few hours before it started via social media, and thousands of fans lined up the South Mumbai streets to cheer the ‘paltan’ (regiment) as they like to call themselves. PTI reported that team owner Nita Ambani was on the bus with them; that Malinga was seen waving to the crowd and head coach Mahela Jayawardene was viewed holding the coveted cup; veteran Yuvraj Singh was also seen holding the IPL trophy even as a few fans chanted 'Bumrah Bumrah' along the way, referring to the 25-year-old fast bowler’s incredible performance during the finals. Incidentally Mumbai Indians, it would seem, are lucky on alternate years – they have won the trophy in 2013, 2105, 2017, and 2019 -- with skipper Rohit Sharma having led Mumbai on all four occasions. Rohit, by the way, is the only player to have won the IPL trophy five times -- 4 with MI and one with Deccan Chargers in 2009. Wohoo!
