Madness and mayhem

Friday, January 05, 2018

DOES the rule of law exist in Mumbai? Clearly not, if the events that unfolded on Wednesday is any indication. Despite adequate notice, the city’s administration did absolutely nothing as Dalits went on a rampage and brought life to a standstill through the entire day.

It was a ‘Mumbai Roko’ agitation that saw total inaction on behalf of the police who, although present in large numbers, did little or virtually nothing to bring the offenders to book. Trains and buses were pelted with stones and stopped, residential areas were affected, shopkeepers had to down their shutters, offices had to shut early and arson and violence were unleashed on many hapless Mumbai citizens who found their entire day disrupted.

Tourists to the city and those who had to attend to emergencies were the worst affected. Clearly, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis needs to pull up his socks and ensure that life in Mumbai is not derailed in this manner. Of what use is the government of the day, if it cannot ensure the rule of law? Why do the powers that be look the other way when vested interests hold the city to ransom?

If Mumbai has any pretentions to being a world class city, like Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis often proclaims it to be, it will have to ensure the safety of its citizens. Wednesday was a dark day in the history of Mumbai. Hopefully, the Chief Minister will ensure better administration in future so that citizens are not inconvenienced like this.
