Lots in a name

Our good friend W. Shakespeare got it all so wrong when he petulantly proclaimed: “What’s in a name...” There’s heck of a lot in a name, actually.

Take Padmavati. Ever since a film director (of some repute and some disrepute!), appropriated the name of the regal Rajput rani, he got himself and his knickers in a twist.

The Censor Board, in its inordinate wisdom, has suggested changing the film’s name from Padmavati to Padmavat, so that there is a clear differentiation between the real and reel queen. Really, does the removal of an “i” count for so much?

Your Diarist has a better suggestion. Why not title it Padma instead?

That way, Padman and Padma, which are due to release simultaneously, can have a parallel run at the box office. What say!
