Journalists thank their mentors

Wednesday, June 13, 2018

Journalist Rituparna Chatterjee (@MasalaBai) seems to have started a movement of sorts on Twitter with her Monday morning tweet that said: “Tag an editor, manager, or senior, you have interacted with who has been extraordinarily kind to you, unfailingly polite and always taken the time to teach, guide, involve and better you. In a climate of hate, let’s pay tribute to the truly good humans who make life bearable.” Her early morning tweet got scores of responses, many of them from journalists, who rushed to show gratitude by remembering and thanking their mentors. Among those who responded were Bachi Karkaria who said it was a wonderful idea, Sarita Tanwar, Harini Calamur, Peter Griffin, Joanna Lobo, Shiv Aroor – mostly journalists, as well as actor Ashwin Mushran. The mentors that got mentioned were Rajdeep Sardesai, Raghav Bahl, Shekhar Gupta, Sudha Pillai, Karan Thapar, Meenakshi Shedde, Suhasini Haider and the late S Nihal Singh. One journalist even wrote in to say that, for her, it wasn’t mentors but her juniors who were most lucky for her and had most often recommended her for the jobs that she landed. Dear reader, the fact is that we have all been helped by someone or the other in some way during our lives. We would urge you to do this simple, harmless exercise -- spend a little time today thinking about all the people who have helped you in your school, college, job/career, or in any other area of your life, from the little, simple things to the more life-transforming ways. If you were to do this on a regular basis, we do think that you will be moving one step closer towards lasting happiness.
