It’s complicated!

Monday, December 04, 2017

There are just no two ways about it. A person’s religion is his or her own business. It’s an utterly private matter and must stay that way.

But what happens when the person concerned is a public figure, forever in the media glare? And what happens, further still, when its election time in Gujarat and the dictum that all’s fair in love, war and elections kicks in?

Such was the plight of poor Rahul Gandhi! The Congress scion, who somehow manages to put his foot into it all the time, found himself in an icky-sticky mess over his entry as a non-Hindu in the Somnath mandir register, when he visited the shrine recently.

The Congress spiel about this being an evil act of sabotage was predictable, to say the least. Equally if not more predictable was the BJP’s rush to tear into RaGa and demand a public declaration of his faith.

Most predictably, Rahul Gandhi himself fell for it and averred that he is from a family of Shiv Bhakts, as Congress party spokespersons avowed that he is a janeu-dhari Hindu Brahmin – or one who wears the sacred thread.

Now, here’s the rub. Rahul Gandhi is born of a Roman Catholic mother and a half-Hindu and half-Parsi father. As they say on social media: “It’s complicated!”

To push him into a corner and force him to publicly make definitive declarations about the faith he follows is both unnecessary and unfair. The poor chap has his plate overfull with woes any way. Let him at least seek a little divine intervention at Somnath in peace. He needs it!

Those who have been unwell will make a quick recovery. A happy occasion will be celebrated in the family. This maybe something, you have been really looking forward to. You shine out at a social gathering as a charming attractive person. A meeting with a new friend has the makings of a torrid romance.
