Hummus shortage and India

Monday, February 12, 2018

The Times of Israel reports that a shortage of chickpea production in the world’s main chickpea producing country, India, is affecting the prices of the Middle Eastern dish hummus, in Britain. Chickpeas (‘Kabuli chana’ in Hindi) is the main ingredient of hummus, which is also popular in India, and the dish also contains garlic, olive oil and sometimes yoghurt. Prices of hummus have risen as much as 12 percent in Britain this year, but the dish is still extremely popular and very much of a staple. In fact, the hummus industry in Britain is worth almost $140 million annually, the Times reports. So then, PM Modi’s concern about focussing on agriculture and our much-neglected farmers is not unjustified, is it?
