Festive season beckons

Monday, October 08, 2018

The festivals of Navratri and Durga Puja are almost upon us. While Navratri the nine-night song-and-dance Gujarati celebration in honour of the Goddess Durga (who represents feminine sacred energy) will take place from October 10-18, the dates for Durga Puja, which also honours Goddess Durga in the Bengali community are October 14/15-19.  Among the more popular Durga Puja pandals in the city is the North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja which is organised by the Mukherjee family and usually has the participation of film stars and cousins Rani Mukerji and Kajol, in it. This year the North Bombay organisation has shifted its puja venue from the traditional locations (for the last six years) of the Balkanji-Bari or Tulip Star, Juhu to the Golden Tobacco Ltd premises in Vile Parle (West) — and the new premises is supposed to accommodate more footfalls. Celebrations at the North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja, which welcomes all devotees of the goddess, will begin at 7.00 pm on October 14 and will come to a close with the immersion of the sanctified Durga statue starting at 6.00 pm on October 19. There will be 4 nights of entertainment from October 14-18 including a members’ musical night, an Alka Yagnik musical night, a Shaan musical night and a Pritam musical night this year. But we also know that this and other city celebrations would accommodate all those who have some substantial reason to remain behind in the city – because every other Bengali we know of, with relatives ‘at home’, will somehow make their way back to Kolkata (or elsewhere in West Bengal) to celebrate ‘pujo’ with their extended family, no?
