'Class of '84' in 15th year!

Wednesday, April 11, 2018

Indian-English plays that run for more than five years in our country are relatively rare. But Rahul da Cunha’s Class of ’84 which is the story of seven friends who meet to collectively remember an eighth friend who has passed away, has now been running for 15 years! We remember the time when Rahul told us, around the turn of the millennium, that he was engaged in writing his first play and that he was working furiously at it – making many drafts and revisions. That was Class of ’84’ – the story he was writing about college friends who had graduated together in 1984 – with its autobiographical overtones.  It’s perhaps a mark of Rahul’s astuteness of what audiences wanted that the playwright’s very first attempt at writing a commercial production has literally hit the ball out of the park! What’s more is that the production features several heavyweights from Indian-English theatre – the show on Saturday,  April 14 at St Andrews auditorium, for example, is scheduled to star Rajat Kapur, Shernaz Patel,  Devika Shahani Punjabi, Sohrab Ardeshir, Dipika Roy, Zafar Karachiwala, Rituraj Singh, Joy Sengupta, which is pretty much the regular cast (though Anahita Uberoi and Vikrant Chaturvedi sometimes step in).  Says actress Devika Shahani Punjabi about the play: “It is a play about friends that’s universal in its appeal. Rahul has brought these amazing bonds alive in his script. Each is a believable character. We must have had a friend like one of them in college – that’s what the audience relates to.”
