Celebrity suicides shock!

Monday, June 11, 2018

Our friends on Facebook are mostly talking about the spate of suicides that have hit some very successful people in their environments. First there was Mumbai police officer Himanshu Roy who killed himself with his licenced gun last month even as he was struggling with the painful effects of cancer. Then just last week, American fashion designer and billionaire Kate Spade (whose bags are popular in our city) hanged herself. And a few days after that American celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, who had earlier covered Indian cuisine, also committed suicide in his posh hotel room in France. The common factor in all three cases, according to general consensus, seems to be – depression. This is a condition that is now being recognised as a clinical disease and one that affects millions of people globally, something that is not related to wealth, status or celebrity (or the lack of it). Many rich, famous and beautiful Bollywood beauties – such as Deepika Padukone and Ileana D’Cruz -- have spoken up about struggling with it and reached out for help. It is not something that can be brushed off with ‘thinking positive’ or asking a person to “shake it off” or “be strong”. Rather, all those in its throes should reach out to their loved ones and for professional assistance at the earliest. For the record, some of the major symptoms of depression include: Sadness or an ‘empty’ mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, feelings of hopelessness, a significant change in one’s eating habits (overeating or undereating), insomnia or sleeping too much, alcohol or drug abuse and withdrawal from friends and family. Of course, even as we say this, we recognise that life is tough, and there can be many reasons within it responsible for depression. But much, much better to reach out and check if one needs assistance rather than take the fatal, final step that these three succumbed to. Wouldn’t you agree?
