Artist Rashmi Pitre to exhibit works at JAG

Wednesday, October 10, 2018

We have known the youthful Rashmi Pitre professionally for some years now as an actress, model and painter. So when she called to invite us for her upcoming art exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery (at the JAG’s first floor Hirjee Gallery) we had all sorts of questions for her: Was this her first show at the Jehangir? What medium had she painted in? What style and themes did her paintings follow? Rashmi answered all of our questions patiently. Yes, this was her first solo show at that venue (which, incidentally, is reputed to have a huge wait list), though she has done several shows at other venues before. That she had primarily painted acrylic on canvas, though there were some oils on canvas too. And that though she started off as a realistic painter, she has evolved to express herself in the abstract and semi-abstract style. “This exhibition called ‘Inscapes’ will have about 40 works done over a duration of three years and they will showcase Nature from abstract and semi-abstract perspectives,” says the painter who also happens to be something of a fixture on the city’s events circuit. For ‘Inscapes’, she tells us that, there is a predominance of the colour blue (since the works deal substantially with seascapes) and that much of the actual painting work was done over the course of monsoon seasons which she loves. Says Rashmi: “I paint spontaneously once I’m inspired – even the colours I choose are selected spontaneously. The most important element of my art is that I need to be inspired sufficiently in order to paint -- and this usually happens when I’m in the lap of Nature.” Her exhibition is scheduled to run from October 15-21 at the gallery (11am-7pm) so drop in if you have a liking for art.
