Abha Singh's reunion with childhood friend

Friday, December 07, 2018

Lawyer and activist Abha Singh has just returned to the city after delivering a talk at Columbia University, New York, on the status of the #MeToo movement in corporate India. Abha is campaigning for legislation to be attached to the #MeToo movement in our country as has been done in the US. She was invited by the Ivy League university as part of ‘India Dialogues’ seminar held annually by the university’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). Says Abha: “A lot of American students I met were astounded to learn that no concrete punitive measures have been taken against sexual harassers in India. And that something which is considered a criminal activity in their country has a stigma attached with regard to even broaching the topic of it in India.” While there, Abha met up with Indian consul general Sandeep Chakravorty in New York and discussed the matter of providing help for women from India who sometimes are conned into marrying duplicitous or polygamous NRI men in the US. But the best part of the entire trip, for this otherwise serious lady was the reunion with a friend from her kindergarten days, Mrinal Thadani-Jhangiani in the Big Apple.  Says Abha: “Mrinal and I have known each other since we were knee-high and it was such a joy to see her again! Not only did she come to collect me from the airport when I reached New York, but she housed me for the days I was in the US, attended the ‘India Abroad’ seminar where I spoke and even dropped me to the airport as I was catching my return flight to India.” And, as Abha adds: “Three cheers to friendship, it’s the best thing in the world!”
