Kumar Gandharva Foundation has instituted an award for a senior musician every year. This year's Kumar Gandharva Memorial Award was announced  to  Prahlad Tipania, the renowned folk singer from Madhya Pradesh. A glittering award function was held on Saturday at P L Deshpande Mini Theatre, Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi . The award was presented by the singer Madhushree Bhattacharya. On the occasion there was an engaging Bharatnatyam recital by  Mandakrkanta Roy, Paramanand Yadav, pupil of Kumar Gandharva sang a 'khyal' in the 'Darbari' raag.

A seminar on the topic of relevance of new content in classical compositions was also held. Among those who participated were critic Shyamrang Shukla and Gopa Chakrabatry. 'The need for fresh bandishes in changing times' was stressed by the learned speakers. LIC of India and the Union Ministry of Culture actively supported the programme.

Hema Upasani, daughter and pupil of the veteran singer Nathrao Neralkar, who dominates the classical music scene in the Marathwada region, sang the raga Ahir Bhairav at a morning concert. Hema has a lovely stage presence and a good command over her art. Her Ahir Bhairav was full of familiar and fluently delivered phrases. There was a splendid sufi composition rendered by the Delhi gharana singer Tanras Khan. Hema sang it with great fervour. She was accompanied on the tabla by Mukta Raste and on the harmonium by Dnyaneshwar Sonawane.  Violinist Kailash Patra has amazing control over his instrument. He played the raga 'Ramkali' with finesse. He also played an Odissi song and a composition in the raga 'Basant. Patra deserves to be heard more often. He was accompanied on the tabla by young Tejovrush Joshi who is another formidable young talent. It was a wonderful blending of melody and rhythm.
