Kishori Amonkar and D K Datar were two outstanding musicians of our era. Whereas Kishori Amonkar dominated the concert stage as a much sought after vocalist Datar, in his quiet and unobtrusive ways played sweet and melodious music on the violin. Amonkar could be cerebral, temperamental and eccentric. But when in the right mood, she could sway the audiences in a manner no body else could do. Datar belonged to the Paluskar school of music. He had, as a young violinist, accompanied the great vocalist D V Paluskar whose music was sweetness personified. The influence stayed with Datar till the very end of his long career.

Datar's disciples like Milind Raikar, Kailash Patra and Rajan Mashelkar have been carrying forward his tradition of violin music. Raikar has established an academy in which a number of young violinist are being trained. Raikar has also trained under Amonkar which is the reason why he jointly celebrates the memory of Amonkar and Datar in an annual programme in association with 'Indradhanush'.

The programme was held at Veer Savarkar Smarak Auditorium at Shivaji Park on a hot Sunday morning. Students of Raikar Academy played a violin concerto in which they presented the raga 'Ahir Bhairav'. It was wonderfully co-ordinated and played with precision and discipline. It was a delight to watch so many violinist playing in unison.

Praveen Gaonkar, a vocalist based in Goa, sang the raga 'Bilaskhani Todi'. Gaonkar has a good voice and he has trained under senior vocalist Ajoy Chakraborty. It was a performance without a blemish. Yadnesh Raikar, son and pupil of Milind Raikar also played the raga 'Ahir Bhairav'. He is fast emerging as a bright star. He was accompanied on the tabla by Vishwanath Shirodkar.

The programme concluded with a vocal recital by senior vocalist Ajay Pohankar who sang the raga 'Shudh Sarang' and a thumri in which he specializes. Pohankar is a seasoned performer and can easily carry the audience with him. He was accomapanied on the harmonium by Niranjan Lele and on the tabla by Vishwanath Shirodkar. It was a proper finis to a well desinged classical concert.
