A 'Guru' occupies a special place in the world of Hindustani music. The Guru is not just an individual but the source of knowledge or the fountain of 'vidya'. Therefore, the Guru is elevated to the status of a deity. Respect for the Guru is an essential feature of the overall value system of Hindustani musicians. Violinist Milind Raiykar is a devoted disciple of the maestro and elder violinist D K Datar. Datar has dominated the violin scene for over four decades. Admired for the sweetness of tone and mastery of ragas, Datar is a almost a cult figure for young violinists.

'Guruvandana' was a three-hour morning program organised by 'Indradhanu' in association with the 'Raykar Academy of Violin' at Ravindra Natya Mandir. The program began with a violin concerto by students of Milind Raikar. Over 50 students who were on the stage played  compositions by Milind Raikar with a good sense of accuracy. They were in perfect 'sur' and  did not miss a single beat. It was a praiseworthy achievement. Milind Raikar and his son/disciple Yadnesh played the seasonal raga 'Megh' to  weighty tabla accompaniment by Mandar Puranik. It was a melodious welcome to the rainy season.

Veteran singer Asha Khadilkar sang the raga 'Salagvarali' which is a recent addition to the repertoire of Hindustani music. It originated in the Carnatic system and now has been adopted by Hindustani system as a morning raga. Khadilkar sang it with usual mastery. Praveen Sheolikar and Vasantrao Sheolikar were accorded violin guru 'sanman' at the hands of D K Datar. The program concluded with a khyal rendition of the raga 'Miyan Ki Malhar' by Shrinivas Joshi, son and disciple of the great Bhimsen Joshi. It had some flashes of the maestro's brilliance. Mandar Puranik and Niranjan Lele provided  tabla and harmonium accompaniment, respectively, while Mandar Vartak compered the show.
