Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre, a premier organization of the megacity holds an annual festival of classical music every year. The Centre has done really commendable work in the area of classical music. There was a time when it used to offer annual subscriptions to students at a concessional rate. This encouraged listening habits among youngsters. Many of the youngsters of those years have now become veteran performers.

The festival, this year, was well attended. The first to perform in the very first session was Debashish Adhikari, a highly talented young singer from the Benaras gharana. He hails from Calcutta and has trained under the renowned thumri singer the late Girija Devi. He sang compositions in the raga 'Marwa', 'Durga' and 'Kirwani'. All his presentations were not too long. There was some precision about his treatment of the ragas chosen. He sings in an extremely cultivated voice which can easily traverse all the three octaves. He sang a 'Durga' composition set to the 10 beat jhap taal. It had a brisk tempo which one found a bit odd.

Kumar Ganharva used to say that this rhythm is meant to be sung at Debashish had an extraordinary tabla player of the calibre of Arvindkumar Azad. His accompaniment enhanced the impact of the performance. On the harmonum was the seasoned harmonist Anant Joshi. Rupak Kulkarni, one of the most sought after bansuri players of the country now, played in the second session. He played ragas like 'Multani' and 'Yaman'. Rupak's 'foonk' of the bansuri is soft and velvety. He does not distort the raga structure for the sake of speed and effect. He was accompanied on the tabla by the Calcutta based Hindole Majumdar. Hindole is a tabla player who is known for his fireworks. The audience simply lapped up the interactive sequences offered by the duo. In the last session, well known singer Shubha Mudgal regaled the audience with her khyals and thumris.
