Today is ‘late’ legendary classical and playback singer-composer Sudhir Phadke’s (also known as ‘Babuji’) 98th  birth anniversary and devotional music-lovers all over will celebrate the occasion, listening to and humming his evergreen melodious songs both in Marathi and Hindi.

Most of his soul-stirring meaningful songs as a singer are tear-jerking, included Marathi film-based melodies like ‘Chaalalee Shakuntala’,  ‘Santh vaahate Krishna maai’  , ‘Kutthe Shodisi Raameshwar’ or even ‘Dehaachi tizori’ , and ‘Tuzhe geet gaannyasaatthi’.

Offering his fond tributes,  ‘Bhajan Samrat’ Anup Jalota said, “What distinguished Sudhir-jee, was that his voice had a divine connection. Many decades ago, I had the privilege to hear him sing ‘live’ his Hindi composed song ‘ Jyoti Kalasha Chalke’ which is sung as ‘playback’ by Lata Mangeshkar  in the movie ‘Bhabhi Ki Chudiyaan’. Proving his versatility he even composed the Hindi dhamaal-masti  number ‘Aaj Pehli Taarikh’ which was sung by Kishore Kumar. But he will always be remembered for his iconic ‘Geet Ramayana’ album which he composed and sang. As he sang those Ramayana  songs ‘live’ with intense emotions, that the audiences would be stifling their tearful sobbing. Incidentally, his real name was ‘Ram’ before he changed it to ‘Sudhir’.”

“Few people know, that  ‘Babu-ji Sudhir and I had a warm personal bonding and I had helped him out with my fund-raising ‘live’ concerts when he humbly approached me to help him make his ‘bio-pic’ on legendary freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, which was his last assignment before he departed from this world,” recalled  eminent classical bhajan-ghazal singer-composer Jalota.
