The 68th Shivali Dance Festival featuring young dancers in different styles, started last week at the Mysore Association auditorium in Matunga. The festival is a tribute to the late dance critic CM Rana, who started this festival to promote young talent.

One of the dancers to be featured on the first day was Saraswati Mendon, who is one of the senior disciples of Shivoham Institute of Performing Arts, headed by accomplished Bharata Natyam exponents, Guru Nilesh Singha and Mubina Barve. Saraswati commenced the performance with the beautiful Telugu composition "Gajavadana Beduve" in praise of Lord Ganesh, seeking blessings and for the success of the performance.

Blessed with a fine stage presence, Saraswati, as the name suggests, has all the necessary qualities  to become a fine exponent, which was quite evident in the number "Bho Shambho" that portrayed the magnificence and the glory of Lord Shiva, particularly the "Ganga avartanam" was well enacted. In Krishna Ne Begane Baro varied episodes like little Krishna eating mud and the subsequent "Viswaroopa darshanam" and Krishna killing the serpent Kaliya was well dramatised.

Saraswati concluded with the intricate Dhanasri Swati Tirunal Thillana with precision. With better concern for "aramandi" and the finer aspects of dancing, Saraswati can go far as a dancer. Saraswati recieved fine orchestral support from Guru Nilesh and Mubina on nattuvangam, vocal by Kumar Krishnan, mridangam by Rajesh Srinivasan and flute by Raghavendra, On the whole, Saraswati is a promising dancer and it was a delightful performance.

Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 20)A plain Jane day. Work goes on as usual, and there is progress. But as Ganesha says, it's an ordinary day. Hum, whistle, doodle, and sip your green tea. While day dreaming, start planning your dream home. After all, that's where the first plan takes shape.
