Accomplished Bharata Natyam exponent and clinical psychologist, Rumya Natraj performed at the Mysore Association auditorium, Matunga. Rumya's Bharata Natyam performance was noteworthy for its expressional excellence and command over the technique.

The programme commenced with the invocatory numbers, folllowed with the Vachaspati Varnam which is the most elaborate number of the Bharata Natyam repertoire, hence a test for the dancer. In this particular composition by Dandayudhpani Pillai, in which the heroine reveals her plight and restlessness to her sakhi and tells her to fetch her Lord at once, as she is unable to bear the "viraha tapam". Rumya was quite at ease in the "sancharis" as she describes her Lord Kartikeya who once tried to woo her in disguise of an old man. Rumya's complete involvement in the performance and her natural expressions were the hallmark of her performance, which was further revealed in the Sant Namdev abhang "Maza Man purna kare deva" encompassing the devotion of the Lord.

The programme items were especially choreographed by veteran mentor Dr. Malati Agniswaran and Rumya did full justice to the performance. The programme was organised as a tribute to dance critic C.M Rana, founder-director of of Shivali Cultural Society of India.

While the Javali featured the lighter shades of "sringara", Rumya concluded her performance with the complex Dhanasri Thillana, a composition of Maharaja Swati Tirunal. Rumya is empanelled performer of Indian Council of Cultural Relations and has several performances to her credit both in India and abroad.
