As part of the Natyanjali festival, organised by Shanmukhapriya of Subrahmanyam temple at Chedda Nagar in Chembur, it was interesting to note that although Bharata Natyam dominated the scene, Kathak dancers too shared the limelight gaining considerable applause from the audience.
One of the talented dancers who performed Kathak was Richa Shrivastava. Richa is the disciple of renowned Kathak exponent Shila Mehta. Blessed with a striking personality and attired elegantly in a blue costume, Richa commenced with a composition of Pt. Birju Maharaj dedicated to Lord Nataraja, "Nirtat Shankara" that vividly interpreted the 'Shiva' and "Shakti” aspect of Lord Shiva, giving a fine rhythmic and interpretative start to her sparkling performance.
After the footwork in Zhap taal (10 beats) that revealed the "layakari" of the dancer. “Chado Chado ji Bihari" depicted the inter-relationship with Lord Krishna, Radha and the gopis. The students who performed were Prajwala, Apoorva, Tanvi and Jennifer. Richa concluded the performance with the intricate Tarana that was appreciated by the audience.
The other dancers who performed on the same day included Kathak by students of Padmini Joshi and Bharata Natyam by students of Venugopal Pillai, Tejaswini Lele and Girija Nair. It is nice to see dancers of different styles, performing on the same platform.
