Birth centenaries of three Maharashtrian icons

The birth centenaries of Maharashtra’s icons... Music Director & Singer Sudhir Phadke (Babuji), poet & scriptwriter Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar (GaDiMa) and literary Purushottam Laxman Deshpande (aka Pu La Deshpande), are being celebrated by the Maharashtra Government and a host of organisations across the globe.
Ramchandra Vinayak Padke alias Sudhir Phadke (Babuji)
(25 July 1919 (Kolhapur)- 29 July 2002 (Mumbai). He composed music for 84 Marathi and 22 Hindi films and sang over 500 songs in nearly 144 Marathi and 9 Hindi films. Together with Y G Joshi, he produced 2 Marathi films, “Vanshacha Diva” (1948) and “Vitthal Rakhumai” (1951) and one Hindi film, “Ratnaghar “(1955). He also produced “Ha Mazha Marg Ekla” (1961) which won a Rashtrapati Puraskar. He later on dedicated a big part of his life to the production of “Veer Sawarkar film”.
Harshwardhan (music lover)
The salaried class would remember the song “Khush Hai Zamana Aaj Pehli Tarikh Hai” (Pehli Tarikh (1954), the music for which was scored by Babuji. The song seeks to remind people that there would be salary payment on the first day of the month. This song used to be played on Radio Ceylon on first of every month in the morning.

Padma Shree G D Madgulkar (GaDiMa)

Most prolific poet and lyricist, he penned over 2000 poems, more than 150 short stories and nearly 25 stories and screenplays for Hindi films. He penned  songs of all genres... children’s songs like “Nach re Mora” and “Mamachya Gavala Jayuya”, or the philosophical song “Jag He Bandishala”, from the movie “Jagachya Pathivar”.

His most lasting contribution was a set of 56 songs called “Geet Ramayan”, which became the evergreen combination of the melodious music and voice of Phadke .
Anand Madgulkar (author and Gadima’ son)
“In 1975 Gadima was seriously ill and his one lung was removed. Yet he survived. But he  cursed his fate and was heard saying “ If I was to die, the people would have forgotten me by now, I don’t know why I am alive”. His literature is ever fresh and that is the reason, his centenary is being celebrated right from Gulbarga (Karnataka) to Switzerland.

P L Deshpande

Padmabhushan Pu La’s birth anniversary is being celebrated in as many as 50 cities across the globe.
