PLEASING KATHAK

Bassein Academy of Performing Arts presented their annual day progrrame at the Bhandari Hall in Vasai (W). It was a pleasure to watch the mentors dance along with their disciples with lot of enthusiasm and devotion,

The Bassein Academy of Performing Arts has been established with the intention of propagating classical arts and training young aspirants, The academy was established by Kathak exponent Dr Neeta Surve. The programme commenced with the invocation, followed with Zhaptaal and Tarana performed well by Surve and her disciples. Surve, a disciple of Guru Chetan Saraiya, danced with confidence and her movements were striking and precise. 'Ardhang' was performed by six disciples of Chetan Sariaya.

The highlight of the evening was the enacting of dance-drama 'Kaliya Dhaman', wherein little Krishna plays with the 'gopis' and the ball accidentally falls into the river. Krishna jumps into it and encounters the ten-headed serpent Kaliya and kills it. This was well enacted by all the students. The role of Krishna was enacted by Bhairavi and the dance-drama was directed by Chetan Saraiya.

The last feature, which also received applause from the audience, was 'Ram StutI', sung by the great Lata Mangeshkar and performed by Chetan.
Chetan effectively portrayed varied episodes like Sita Swayamvaram, the boatman, the Vanaras, Hanuman etc. Parents were thrilled to watch their children perform. On the whole it was a pleasing performance.
