Nabanita casts a spell with Madhuvanti

Dr Nabanita Chaudhary, a well-established classical singer from Greater Noida, was in town recently. She was featured by Shivaji Park Nagarik Sangh in an evening concert. Nabanita is endowed with a broad and expressive voice which conveys a lot even as she sings mere vowels. She hails from the Benaras gharana of which Rajan and Sajan Mishra are the front ranking singers. Nabanita has received training from this duo.

The element of rasa in her singing could be traced to this influence. Nabanita had selected the raga Madhuvanti for elaborate treatment. Madhuvanti is deceptively close to 'Multani' but it has little of the sombreness and gravity of Multani. The notes' natural R and D with a dash of flat and the romantic flavour of the raga, was nicely explored by the singer. The appeal of her singing was enhanced by the appropriate tabla accompaniment provided by Avinash Patil.

The programme also featured young Aditya Khandwe, who is one of the most brilliant young singers. Aditya has been trained by his mother Vidya who herself is a trained singer. He has been further trained by formidable gurus like Yashwantbuwa Joshi,  Ratnakar Pai and Dhondutai Kulkarni. Aditya sings with a lot of energy. He had selected the raga Bihagada which is a typical Jaipur gharana melody. The note flat n completely changes the complexion of the more familiar 'Bihag' which has its own majestic feel.

Aditya's phrase-based unfolding of the raga was engaging and his efficient execution of complex 'taan' patterns was mind boggling. He also sang the raga 'Basant' in which he sang a composition made by the great Dinkar Kaikini. Siddhesh Bicholkar on the harmonium and C Abhay Datar on the tabla lent superb support to the young singer.
