Mumbai leading suburban cultural organisation, Sharda Sangeet Vidyalaya presented the three-day Durga festival featuring talented dancers across the country. The festival was held at Nadabrahma Mandir in Bandra. The dancers featured on the first day of the festival were Sujata Nair for Bharata Natyam, Priyanka Shinde for Kathak and Mitali Varadkar for Odissi.

It was a pleasant surprise to witness the exquisite Bharata natyam performance by Sujata Nair, as she normally performs Mohiniattam. Sujata is the disciple of Guru Jayashree Nair of Upasana Dance Academy. Mitali Varadkar left a lasting impression with her dramatic portrayal of Ramayana in an concised format in the Odissi style.

Mitali is the niece and disciple of accomplished Odissi exponent Shubhada Varadkar. Mitali presented an extract from the classic by Tulsidas - Shri Ramcharitra Manas, that picturised the story of Ramayana through his insight and philosophy that conquers over the evil and the ultimate death of Ravana. With suitable and powerful music and an emotional vocal rendering by the singer, the dancer takes you to a journey of Ram, Lakshman, Sita, the golden deer, the abduction of Sita, Jatayu's struggle and battle, Hanuman's devotion and ultimately the killing of Ravana. Mitali did complete justice to the presentation with amazing 'abhinaya' and typical bodily movements, particularly the gait and the movements of the golden deer and the fight of Jatayu was most impressive.

Mitali has danced for several prestigious festivals all over the country and if she continues to dance with the same amount of passion and zeal, she can definetely aspire to be among the main ranks of dancers. Priyanka Shinde impressed the audience with her powerful footwork in the kathak style.
