The memories of “Sangeet Natak” (musical drama), which used to be a rage till late seventies in Maharashtra, came alive in a musical drama festival organised by the Dadar-Matunga Culture Centre in association with “Vimal Trust” in Mumbai recently.

Different drama groups vied with each other to present their best talent, including powerful prosaic dialogues accompanied by melodious music.

“Sangeet Natak” combines prose as well as poetry in form of songs to convey the story. It has played a vital role in the development of Marathi theatre and the Marathi cinema as well as Indian film industry. The festival was organised by the Dadar-Matunga Culture Centre to enable theatre groups located outside Mumbai to present their plays every year, the Working President of the centre and dramatist Suresh Khare said in his inaugural speech.

The notable feature of the fest was that the patrons got the opportunity to watch the best of the dramas like “Sangeet Mandarmala”, “Sangeet Manapman” and “Sangeet Sanshaykallol”.

The fest began with “Sangeet Mandarmala” presented by Deval Smarak Mandir, Sangli. The original drama written by Pandit Vidyadhar Gokhale, was directed by Sharad Bapat. The songs sung by Abhishek Kale, Shriddha Joshi and Devdatt Peshkar received overwhelming response from the viewers.
