It is said that the real musician never gets old. One often comes across examples of musicians who keep performing with astonishing ability and competence even when they cross eighties. We have seen Gangubai Hangal and Bhimsen Joshi singing their gamak taans when they were into their nineties. Krishnarao Pandit too could also present amazing music after crossing 80. Celebrated sitarist Ravi Shankar kept on mesmerizing the audiences even after he reached 90s. It is said that of all the human organs, the voice is the last one to get affected by the onslaught of the ageing process. The latest example of this phenomenon was a live performance by the veteran Gwalior gharana vocalist Sharad Sathe who gave a stunning concert last week.

Sathe is a rare product of the Gwalior gharana. He combines in himself two streams of the Gwalior gharana. He was initially trained in the Paluskarite tradition. D V Paluskar, the darling of the average music lover was his first guru. After Paluskar's untimely demise, he was trained by Prof B R Deodhar who was more of an academic and was a repository of rare ragas. His last guru was none other than the late Sharadchandra Arolkar, who had a direct connection with the origin of the Gwalior gayaki which was developed by Hassu and Haddu Khan in the 19th century. Sathe proved his mettle once again at the programme in which he sang ragas like 'Bhairav','Bhatiyar' and 'Jaunpuri'. Tonal curve or 'meend' is the essence of the Gwalior gayaki. His rendition of ragas was full of meends and tonal jerks like 'khatka'.

Sathe also sang rare forms like 'Tappa' and 'Tap Khyal'. These forms are not everybody's cup of tea. Sathe showed rare mastery and maturity while handling and presenting these forms. Sanjay Deshpande on the tabla and Suyog Kundalkar on the harmonium gave superb support to the singer. Vishal Moghe and Kurulkar gave steady vocal support.
