As part of the Janmashtami celebrations, the International Shri Krishna Consciousness, programme of classical music and dance was presented at the Shri Radha Giridhari Mandir in Mira Road last week.

One of the classical dance performances was the Bharatanatyam recital by accomplished Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi exponent Subitha Murli and her students. Subitha Murli heads the Saraswati Kala Kendra in Mira Road where she trains young aspirants in classical dance. The programme commenced with the traditional Allarippu that introduced the basic steps of Bharatanatyam which was performed by all the students followed by invocatory numbers in praise of Lord Ganpati as the remover of obstacles and protector of all mankind and Goddess Saraswati as the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. It was quite exciting to see young children performing with lot of sincerity and honesty.

It was a pleasant surprise to watch the mothers of the students performing the traditional folk dance of Kerala known as Kaikottikali, which litterally means ‘clap and dance’. They performed quite well, winning  appreciation from the audience. Krishna Lila portrayed the little naughty Krishna eating mud and mother Yashoda is shocked to see the Vishwaroopa Darshanam in his little mouth and his other pranks. Swagatham Krishna was performed by Subitha herself in praise of Lord Krishna. Subitha performed with devotion and involvement.

The highlight and last performance was the Raslila that symbolises the Maha Raas in which all the gopis dance along with Lord Krishna, giving a spectacle to the audience that there are several Krishnas dancing along with the gopis, thereby portraying the philosophy that the human soul unites with the Divine. It is creditable on the path of Subitha Murli to teach and to encourage young children to take up classical dance in today’s world where western culture and lifestyle dominates the scenario.
