'Learning music should be made compulsory': Sonu Nigam

Despite a painful spasm in his back, rock-star Sonu Nigam who has just returned from the U.S. sat at  the school classroom listening and humming, as a bunch of kids performed on stage. Senior Bollywood music-composers siblings Anand-Milind (of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak fame) had specially invited their protege singer to launch their ‘music academy’ at Powai. The ocasion was also graced by ‘culture-savvy’ real estate tycoon  Niranjan Hiranandani who was the affable host. Incidentally, Anand-Milind had given Sonu his major initial break when he sang playback songs for ‘Aazmayish’ (1995). The outspoken Sonu emphasized “the need to include vocal and instrumental music learning as a compulsory subject in the academic syllabus, as is the mandatory practice in the U.S.  It brings soothing harmony into your life as well, ” he said, with his little son Nevaan nodding in acknowledgment. “That's because Nevaan is learning to play the piano”, informs papa Nigam.

Later, they were joined by hero Govinda (for a change, he came on time!) who has danced to dozens of chart-busting filmy songs composed by Anand-Milind. The after-event celebrations at the opulent Hiranandani Gallery witnessed a turnout of music celebs like Suresh Wadkar, Alka Yagnik, Sapna Mukherjee, Abhijeet, Jatin, Viju Shah, Shravan, Aroon Bakshi, Rimesh Raja, Vandana Vadehra, Simran Ahuja, Mukesh Rishi, Raju Singh and also business magnates Akhil Bansal and Yogesh Lakhani.
