Raj Kapoor, the greatest showman of the Indian cinema was popular not only in the Indian sub continent but also in the erstwhile Soviet Union and her satelliate countries as well as in places like Turkey and Iran. Songs from his films were extremely popular and they were hummed by the masses. The reason being, many of those songs were based on the raga Kirwani which has its pareller melody in Western music. Foriegners relate easily to this raga because it does not sound unfamiliar to them.

'Kirwani' is basically a raga of the Carnatic origin. It uses the flat g and d.It was included in the Hindustani music repertoire by eminent sitarists like Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan and Ravi Shankar. It is one of those ragas which is easily amenable to fusion with Western music.Noted Gwlaior gharana vocalist Neela Bhagwat's interactive CD with the British pianist Camilla has raga 'Kirwani' as the main theme. A similar and equally exciting musical exchange took place between senior santoor exponent Snehal Muzoomdar and the Americal Jazz singer Paula Jenaine at the Y B Chavan Auditorium last week. They performed the raga 'Kirwani' together and the audience was simply overwhelmed. Anuradha Pal on the tabla was brilliant as usual.

The concert entitled 'The Age of Aquarius' was hosted by V Care' which is looks after cancer patients. Vandana Gupta who leads the organisation is herself a cancer survivor and a spirited activist. Compositions of Kabir, Rabindranath Tagore and Soordas always provide inspiration to the human beings in distress. They provide solace to the hearts in agony. Celebrated Kathak exponent Keka Sinha and Anamika danced to the tune and rhythmm of such immortal lyrics. It was a wonderful display of rhythm and action. Indeed a memorable evening.
