Enchanting Rendition of Folk Songs

Out country has scores of languages and hundreds of dialects. This has given rise to a plethora of musical expressions which are typical to the various dialects.

The Poorvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh (UP) is a rich mine of music and folk tales. It has provided raw material and ample source material to semi classical forms like thumri, kajri, chaiti, barmaasa and other related forms. The entire sub continent swings to the tune of songs from films like 'Mother India', 'Ganga Jamuna', 'Milan' and 'Heera Moti'. These tunes are based on the folk songs of the eastern UP region.

'Madhuban Charitable Trust'  organized a programme of folk songs from the 'Brajbhoomi' and eastern UP at the Prempuri Ashram at Babulnath. Elder musician Haridev Chaturvedi and scholar musician Dr. Shailesh Srivastav presented these songs. These songs had shades of melodies and ragas like 'Pilu,'Des' which are easily identifiable from the point of view of common music lovers. Both Chaturvedi and Ms Srivastav managed to hold the attention of the audience with their powerful singing.

A condolence cum tribute meet in memory of the late Ustad Aslam Khan was held at the Sangit Mahabharati Juhu. Aslam Khan was one of the finest singers living in this city for over seven decades. He combined the musical styles of Attrauli, Khurja, Hapur, Delhi and Agra gharanas. He not only had deep and silken voice but was also capable of investing his renditions with a lot of vigour. This  in spite of a paralysis stroke which otherwise incapacitated him. Over the decade he was seen moving about in a wheel chair or physically lifted to the concert platform. It was a touching sight reminiscent of the fate of great masters like Balgandharva and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Goswami Shyam Baba of the Vallabh sect recalled how Aslam Khan recited 50 songs in praise of Lord Krishna for his audience in South Africa. Speakers also recalled his mastery of rare ragas like 'Kamodi Malhar' and 'Paraj Kalingada'. Others who spoke included Nayan Ghosh, Ghulam Hasnain Khan 'Raja’ Miyan, Wajahat Khan, Yakub Hussain Khan, Ramdas Bhatkal and Swami Chaitanya Swaroop. A recording of his 'Manjiri Bihag' was played on the occasion.
