DEEPAK ENTHRALLS AT HARIDAS FESTIVAL

By Vijay Shanker

Sur Singar Samsad organised the 59th Swami Haridas Sangeet Sammelan featuring classical music and dance at the Mumbai University Club House auditorium in Churchgate. It was interesting to watch dancers from different styles performing in the same platform.

The dancers featured were Pt Deepak Mazumdar, Lata Surendra, Paullomi Mukherjee, Mandakini Trivedi, Shailaja Desai, Keka Sinha, Shanti Mohanty Dave, Mitali D'souza, Vaishali Patil, Shubhada Varadkar, Varada Padke, Archan Patni, Sangeeta Rajan, Aishwarya Venkatesh and Priya Admane. Bharata Natyam and Kathak dominated the festival which was thinly attended.

Guru Deepak Mazumdar, eminent teacher and Bharata Natyam exponent enthralled the audience with his 'Satvik Abhinaya' creating a lasting impression on the audience. He interpreted two compositions which incorporated the 'vatsalya' of  Yasoda towards Krishna. Surdas bhajan 'Hari Pale Julawe Jasoda', wherein mother Yasoda tries to put the little Krishna to sleep. The second number was an extract from Krishna Karnamrutam was an unusual composition in which mother Yasoda narates Valmik's Ramayana to put little Krishna to sleep, wherein the dancer dramatises some of the important episodes like the abduction of Sita and the killing of Ravana. The subtle and innocent expression of the little infant was well enacted by Deepak.

Shanti Mohanty Dave is the disciple of Dr Sandhya Purecha. She performed Kalai Thuki, Aaji Sonyacha Divas and the Shankarabharnam Thillana precisely, but one can expect a better performance from Shanti. It was creditable on behalf of MK Patel to organise the festival in spite of certain difficulties.
