Bharata College of Fine Arts and Culture presented 'Colours of Kathak' bringing together the vibrant artistic and musical flavours of Kathak through a colourful performance, organised by Priyadarshini Park, Napeansea Road. A rare and interesting initiative of taking classical dance closer to the common man.

The Kathak presentation began on a invocatory and calming note with “Ardhanareeshwaram Stotram” sung by Bhanumati Narsimhan and danced by Riddhi Saraiya followed by Dhrupad-“Niratata Shankar Girija sangh”, presented by Amruta Salvi, Shraddha Bhide, Sugandha Kolhatkar and choreographed by Vaishali Dudhe. The vigorous Dhrupad in 12 beat cycle chautaal, took one back to the the temples of Kashi. The dancers performed with lot of enthusiasm and sincerity.

The dancing Natraja was followed by the dancing Natawar through a beautiful Thumri Tarana Tarang by Richa Srivastava and Sunil Sunkara. The thumri, ”Dagar Chalat Dekho” composed by Bindadin Maharaj, sung by Somnath Mishra displayed a wonderful chemistry between Richa and Sunil who brought the divine romance of Radha and Krishna to the seashore .

The Darbaar era of Kathak was brought to life through Teentaal composed by Pt Birju Maharaj, choreographed by Paullumi Mukheerjee, kathak faculty at Bharata College of Fine Arts and Culture, which she presented along with her students Malaika Castellino, Rishita Jaiswal and Shraddha Desai.
Paullumi, who is a Gandabandh disciple of Ramadevi Lacchu Maharaj brought to stage the beauty and delicacy of the Lucknow Gharana. The teentaal flowed into a popular Sufi Kalaam by Amir Khushro, ”Chhap Tilak”, where Kajal Bharti, Neha Bodade, Sneha Chaudhari and Sunil Sunkara joined to create a oneness that is the Sufi ethos. This finale piece had the crowd singing along and clapping and set the mood for the band that followed- Kabir Cafe. The dias was graced by Dr. Sandhya Purecha, principal of Bharata College of Fine Arts and Culture along with philanthropist Anita Garware.
