Ila Dalal Dance Academy presented an unusual and unique Bharata Natyam recital by Renu Kapoor at the NCPA Godrej Dance Academy Theatre last week. The performance was an evidence as to how one can remain healthy and happy by consistently practising Bharata Natyam, while coming closer to the divine aspect of the rich style of Bharata Natyam.

Renu Kapoor is an ardent disciple of Ila Dalal who is an accomplished Bharata Natyam exponent and dance therapist and also heads the Illa Dalal Dance Academy, who has trained several aspirants in varied disciplines of dance.

Renu Kapoor commenced the performance with the traditional Alarippu and followed with the Ganesh Stuti sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Shankar Mahadevan that vividly describes and power and the glory of the Lord. Illa Dalal and her disciples demonstrated the "tai chi" technique of energizing the complete body with the tap method, the audience was surprised to know about the health benefits. The piece-de-resistance of the evening was "Bhishaj Sardham Nritya" - healing with dance with the Mudra therapy, different mudras (hand gestures) are used to maintian good health and cure diseases, this was followed by 'Namah Shivaya" in which Renu danced on the brass plate in perfect rhythm..

The popular number "Piya Tohe Naina" from the film "Guide" was a surpise item that thrilled the audience. Besides the combination of Indian and western music in "Swala", the folk "Ghumar" and Shankar Mahdevan's "Breathless" was the added attraction of the programme that was well applauded by the packed audience. In spite of being a professional chartered accountant, it is creditable that Renu pursues her passion for Bharata Natyam as she danced with ease and elegance, winning the appreciation from the audience.
