Award winning 'Ashrunchi Zhali Phule' is back

Wednesday, May 01, 2019

“Ashrunchi Zhali Phule”, (Tears Turned Into Flowers), an award-winning Marathi play by Vasant Shankar Kanetkar, which had created history, will be enacted after long time at Kalidas Sabhagriha, Nashik on May 1st, Maharashtra Day.

The organisers are planning to stage 51 shows all over Maharashtra. Earlier 1111 shows of this evergreen drama were staged by veteran actor/director Prabhakar Panshikar from 1966 till 2002, under the banner of “Natya Sampada”.

In 1966, Kanetkar received a filmfare award for best story for the Hindi movie “Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool”, adapted from “Ashrunchi Zhali Phule”. The 1984 Hindi movie “Mashaal” was also based on this play.

The play depicts the turns in fortunes in the lives of the two main protagonists, Vidyanand, a professor of mathematics and his intransigent student “Lalya”, who graduates from college and enters the Indian Police Service as a cadet. In the meanwhile, his college is taken over by a local politician who wants to exploit the college for commercial gain. When Vidyanand resists, he implicate him in false bribery charges. He is sent to jail where he undergoes a transformation, and becomes a hardened criminal.

In the meantime, Lalya, a senior police officer by now, is assigned to apprehend Vidyanand. Eventually Vidyanand achieves his revenge, but realises that he has compromised the very values he stood for earlier. In the end, he is apprehended by Lalya.

Subodh Bhave, Shailesh Datar, Seema Deshmukh and Umesh Jagtap are in lead roles in the new version of the play. The play has been produced by Dinesh Pednekar, Abhijit Deshpande and Majiri Bhave, while it is directed by Pratima Kulkarani.

The music has been scored by Milind Joshi. The lights/sets have been handled by Pradip Mulay, while costumes are handled by Geeta Godbole.
