Every gharana of music has produced a number of good artistes. Some great and some above average. However, every gharana does not have great interpreters of music. The Gwalior gharana was lucky to have one in the late Sharadchandra Arolkar who was not only a great singer but also a kind of an idiologur who could put the Gwalior gharana gayaki in a proper perspective. Unlike many other singers of his and the earlier generations, he was not only articulate but also sophisticated in his approach and expression. He could help to evolve and develop the aesthetic principles which shaped and guided this gayaki.

His memory is kept alive by 'Khayal Trust' by hosing a music festival on a grand scale befitting the stature of the artiste. Amol Nisal, a young singer based in Poona was the first to perform. He is a pupil of the renowned singer Ajoy Chakrabarty. Amol was initially groomed by the veteran teacher Gangadhar Pimplekhare who has trained many an established singer from Poona. Amol sings in a sharp voice. If he could modulate it further, his music will make a better impact. He sang the raga 'Bageshri' and a bhajan popularized by the maestro Bhimsen Joshi. Amol passed the muster and could turn in a reasonaly good performance.

Dr Meeta Pandit, grand daughter of the great Krishnarao Shankar Pandit and daughter / disciple of the doyen of the gharana Laxmanrao Pandit sang the raga 'Shankara' with dignity and authority. She sings in a high pitched voice and has achieved  amazing flexibiltiy of her voice. Her 'So Jaan Liya' and 'Ali Mori Nirbharan Kaisi Jaun' slow and fast paced khyals in the raga were catchy. She also sang an attractive tappa in the raga 'Tilang;,

Basant Kabra, a senior sarod player gave a stunning performance on the evening. He is now a major instrumentalist belonging to the 'Maihar' gharana. His stroke exudes power and strength. He is a pupil of the maestro Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna Devi. His 'Chhayanat' was a real masterpiece.

The convoluted phrases of the raga, played with rare mastery made a deep a impression. He also played a superb 'Bhairavi' reminiscent of the maestro Ali Akbar Khan. Durjay Bhaumik on the tabla lent superlative support. Among those who accompanied with distinction were Nilesh Ranadive ,Mandar Puranik (Tabla) and Gangadhar Shinde/ Siddhesh Bicholkar (Harmonium). Padmaja Patil Dighe compered the show with unfailing grace.
