During the inspection of car shed at Mumbai Central by A.K. Gupta – General Manager of Western Railway recently, the problem of littering and throwing of garbage on railway tracks was highlighted.

As per General Manager’s directives on this issue, sensitization drive against garbage dumping has been initiated by RPF Mumbai Central all over Mumbai Suburban line as well as other railway premises over Mumbai Division.

According to a press release issued by Ravinder Bhakar – Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, identification of such locations prone to littering and dumping have been identified and RPF has been directed to organise sensitization drives in these areas in coordination with local NGOs, Sarpanchs and State Govt. employees to create awareness among the residents residing alongside railway tracks and to maintain sanitation in their respective areas. “Local residents are being sensitized about how garbage dumping on railway tracks not only dirties the tracks but also choke the rain water flow in the upcoming monsoon season which causes a major safety hazard. Uncleanliness of tracks will lead to unhygienic situations which can also cause diseases to the residents of the area littered. In regard to this, RPF have organised joint awareness campaigns alongside the tracks on May 12 and sensitized local inhabitants with the help of NGOs and railway men. Till now, such sensitization drives have been organised in various railway premises at Virar, Andheri and Surat stations.”
