Cybercrime experts have time and again issued advisory to take precautions when withdrawing money from Automated Teller Machines (ATM). However many customers are still ignorant and fall prey to con artists.

A 51-year-old woman became the latest target, after she was duped of Rs. 20,000 at an ATM in Bhayandar on Monday evening. An unidentified man fled with her debit card and the knowledge of its PIN number under the pretext of helping her withdraw money.

The incident took place at the ATM booth of a reputed multinational bank when the victim woman Pranali Patil went there to withdraw money using her debit card. The woman in her complaint to the police, stated that when she encountered problem in following the system of withdrawal, the cheat posing as a customer-in queue, stepped in. Under the pretext of offering help, the accused apparently kept observing the PIN that the victim was entering in the system after punching the card. Claiming the machine had run out of cash, the crook hurriedly left the booth, but not before replacing her card with a swift sleight of hand. The crook used the card and its memorized PIN to withdraw Rs. 20,000 cash from her account, but at another ATM. Shocked at receiving alerts informing about the debit transaction from her account, the victim  reported the matter to the Bhayandar police.

A FIR has been registered and efforts were on to procure the footage's captured by the CCTV cameras  installed in and around the ATM booth, police said. Officials have appealed people not to entertain strangers while carrying out transactions at ATM booths.
