The victim girl spoke about her ordeal to a counselor who had been visiting her municipal school since July 2017

A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act court recently remanded two uncles of a 14-year old girl, who was staying with her aunt and one of the accused men, aged 51, to four days police custody.

As per the police complaint, the Class 8 student had lost her mother and her father had remarried. In the circumstances, since January 2017 she had been staying with her maternal aunt and husband in Bhendi Bazaar area. The couple had lost their son two years prior and had taken  responsibility of rasing her.

On February 5, the girl informed a counselor who had been visiting her municipal school since July 2017 about her situation. She told the counselor that her 'Khalu' (uncle) always gives her a 'bad touch'.

According to the police complaint, when the counselor asked further, the girl confided in her that whenever her aunt is not at home, her uncle touches her inappropriately in her private parts. She also told about an instance when her uncle had exposed his private part to her by suddenly removing his lungi and she had to turn away.

The teenager said that in the past two years since she had been residing with them, the 51-year-old was continuously abusing her in this manner whenever he found her alone at home. When asked if she had told her aunt about it, the girl said that though she had complained about this to her aunt, she had done nothing.

When the counselor who later became the complainant in the case asked the girl if there is anyone else who troubles her, she revealed her ordeal with another uncle – the husband of another maternal aunt. She complained that this man, who used to live with his family in Null Bazaar area, used to visit the home where she lived on some pretext or the other and then touch her inappropriately. The girl claimed that this had happened about four to five times. Defence lawyer, advocate RU Jha said that the special court had remanded the men to four days police custody. The police has taken custody of the minor and she is currently lodged in Dongri Children's Home.
