In less than ten days, two ATMs in Bhiwandi were targetted by unidentified robbers, to cut open the cash vending machines, using gas cutters who decamped with Rs. 17.60 lakh rupees in Kongaon area in Bhiwandi.

Pawan Nandre, police sub inspector, Kongaon police station said, "During the primary probe, we found three to four thieves, who covered their faces with masks, using spray bottles to  spray on the CCTV camera, to avoid their images from being captured and reducing their chances of being nabbed. We will go through the network location, from which will get some clue of the thieves".

The thieves targeted the area, in which the ATM was located, due to poor patrolling by police. No action against the bank's security has been taken till now.

The incident came to light on Monday morning at around 7 a.m. when a woman heard some sounds emerging from the ATM.

According to the woman, who witnessed the robbers fleeing away,  “Around three to four masked people were seated in a four wheeler just outside the ATM, which is situated on the ground floor of a three storied building. I opened the window and shouted which alarmed the thieves and they immediately fled away with the cash.”

The police said that the theft probably took place between 2.am and 5 am. The thieves, after spraying on the CCTV camera, used a gas cutter to cut  open the ATM and fled with Rs 17.60 lakh from the State Bank of India ATM in Bhiwandi.

The incident has raised question about the security of bank's ATMs as in such cases, the ATMs, alarms set off and alerts the police, howerver, in this case the alarm did not trigger off.

The police found out that the team that supervises CCTVs of ATMs from their centralised office also did not notice the incident till  the woman alerted them. Also, no security guard was present at the ATM for months.

A case was registered against accused under sections 380, 457,34 of Indian Penal Code.
