Mumbai University students who protested against fee hike met the Vice-Chancellor last week but have not seen significant progress in the matter

In the aftermath of their protest against various issues such as fee hike, Mumbai Univeristy students met with Vice-Chancellor Dr. Devanand Shinde on March 5 last week. "We received a positive response from the VC," said Vivek D'Souza, a student of political science in the University. "We were assured that starting with the reversal of examination fees back to Rs. 660, all our demands would be met. However, when we asked for a written assurance, the officials were not too happy," he added. The students have also raised concerns over other issues such as delayed results and infrastructure of the campus.

"Since our meeting with the VC, the University administration has not given any clarity in terms of the circular to be issued for the reversal of fees. We have been following up every day but there has been a consistent delay in issuing the notice," said D'Souza, who further went on to say that the varsity is following a 'deliberate tactic' to pass the buck and delay a solution to their problem. "We are told that the Exam House has sent irregular notices. This is a deliberate tactic so that students are kept in the dark and they are threatened / forced to pay a huge semester fee," he said.

The students have claimed to have been charged differently at different departments and as per the circular, fees will be hiked by 5 per cent every year starting 2019.

A student who did not wish to be named, said, "When we called the PA to the Registrar, Dr. Dinesh Kamble, she kept delaying the process saying they will send it across and that the registrar hasn't yet signed the document."

When asked what the students shall do if their demands are not fulfilled in the next week, D'Souza said, "We shall try and speak to the vice-chancellor one more time. However, as much as we don't want to do it, we might be forced to have another protest. A peaceful solution to our demands is all we ideally seek". Inspite of repeated attempts we were unable to get through to Dr. Dinesh Kamble, Registrar, Mumbai Unibersity.
