In an interesting development, meat butchers from across the city under the banner of Maharashtra Rajya Muslim Kathik Samaj (MRMKS); an association of Muslim butchers have threatened to close their mutton shops for an indefinite period if illegal action by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) continues.

The butchers have also threatened that the members associated with this profession will come out on the streets, in case their demands to stop illegal action are not met.

Speaking to the ADC, Haji Arfat Shaikh, President of MRMKS said, “Mutton shop owners in the city and suburbs are being harassed by the BMC staff while imposing a fine for small issues and illegal raids are being conducted on mutton shops. Following this, we have received several complaints from our member shop owners and the association has decided to shut their shops as well as come out on the street in a unique way.”

Shaikh added, “Butchers from the city will gather at Azad Maidan shortly along with knives and other instruments used for cutting mutton and the same will be thrown at the historical ground as a mark of their protest. In 1995, our community was recognised as the Other Backward Class (OBC) by the state government while the Hindu butchers who are also engaged in the same profession were given a status of Schedule Tribe (ST). Why this discrimination with us? The members of this community get a caste certificate easily by the government. However, it is very difficult to get a caste validity certificate for our caste.”

Shaikh further added that there are around 30 lakh butchers who are engaged in this profession across the state, and all these people will be uniting for a permanent solution to their problems.
