While an alarming rise in the number of malnourished children areregularly reported from the rural and tribal dominated areas of Palghar and Thane districts, as many as 74 malnourished kids have now been detected in various parts of urbanised locations in the twin city of Mira Bhayandar.  However, it is feared that  the number of under nourished children could be much higher. This shocking revelation unfolded following a joint survey recently conducted by the State Government's Child Development and Welfare wing and the Mira BhayandarMunicipal Corporation (MBMC). There is a separate section  formal nourished children at the civic  hospital in Thane, however parents are reluctant to travel all the way from the city for medication andtwo weeks of hospitalization.

To tackle the issue and take steps to deal with malnutrition, the civic administration has rolled up its sleeves to set up a 12-bed, dedicated Nutrition Rehabilitation Center (NCR) at its own hospital located at Tembha in Bhayandar (west).

NCR is a health care facility where malnourished children are admitted for fourteen days, following which four follow-ups of the children discharged from the NRC at an interval of 15 daysis done, officials said.

It should be noted that there are  82 Anganwadi’s and 26 Bal-Wadi’s (children-home or centre)  in the twin-city which cater to the needs of around 50,000 children aged upto six years under the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) project which is a package of integrated services consisting ofsupplementary nutrition, immunization, health check up, referral andeducation service. The children largely belong to the economically weaker sections of society.
