In a grand plan last November, the Maharashtra Government directed BMC school teachers to take selfies with their students and upload them onto the server in order for the officials to keep tabs on attendance and other statistics. Slow internet speeds, basic communication errors and the general labeling of the exercise as 'non-academic' by the teachers themselves, has forced this trend driven plan to make a hasty exit!
Yesterday, after several discussions and arguments between Tawde and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Mantralaya, the decision was made to eliminate the selfie initiative. Reportedly, the prime reason for the failure, is the lack of clarity in the implementation. Tawde in the meeting stated that according to the government resolution, which was passed on November 7, last year, the selfie initiative was aimed at the drop-out students and for those who remain regularly absent. Because of an error in communication with the education department, it was announced as a daily selfie op for the teachers and their students!
The Maharashtra School Education and Sports Department too, agreed with the decision to scrap the selfie. Reportedly, the initiative back fired, just the second week after the announcement, as the teachers across the state protested against the scheme. According to them it was 'non-academic'.
Loopholes in the initiative
According to Anil Bornare and the other members of Teachers' Constituency, an important reason is internet connection. "The remote areas in the state, who don't even have proper electricity, how can you expect them to upload those selfies on the server? It takes nearly two three days to upload a single selfie, which is rubbish and a waste of time," Bornare said to Afternoon D&C. He continued, “These schools already have the provision of 'biometric attendance' so, the Teachers' Constituency rubbished the selfie attendance system.”
