Sachin Tendulkar joins hands with BMC for a better Deonar

Mission 24 focuses completely on Deonar and other areas in M/ East ward and aims to improve the living condition in the area.

A special event was  launched to focus only on M east ward which is considered to be the most underdeveloped and inhabitable wards of Mumbai amongst the 24 wards. This mission focuses on developing basic facilities like schools, hospitals, toilets, open spaces and foot over bridges  for safe commute of the residents. Development of Deonar dumping ground is also on the agenda of the Apnalaya and Mumbai first who have collaborated with Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation (BMC) and will work towards this aim in the coming 24 months.

The mission aims to cover a total of 3819. 71 hectares of land which is completely under the jurisdiction of BMC. The ward is predominantly residential in nature with an industrial estate at Majithia Industrial Estate and Deonar.

According to Human Development Report, 2009, M/East is rock bottom andlies at the 24th position among the 24 wards in Mumbai. The developed area is about 67 percent of the ward that is 2559.55 hectares. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar has come forward and announced his participation at the launching event on Tuesday at BMC headquarters.  

According to the BMC's Development Plan data, the ward has a deficit of 107.2 hectares for education amenities, 22.48 ha for health and 178.98 ha for open spaces. Mission 24 is a collaborative effort of the two NGOs and the civic body to improve the quality of life for those living in the ward, especially for those living close to the Deonar dumping ground. The best practice model of better living through active participation from civil society, private sector, non-government organisation and local stake holders to boost the government efforts will be achieved through this initiative.

The mission aims to make one secondary school,  one college, making schools disable friendly, one learning cum training centers for school dropouts, 100 Integrated Child Development Services Aanganwadis, one maternity homes, five health posts, three dispensaries, two playgrounds makeover,  two recreation ground, foot over bridge on Makhurd-Vashi road, foot over bridge across Harbour line, makeover of Govandi and Mankhurd stations, refurbishments or exiting community toilet blocks, development of new Toilet block with BMC and MHADA, focus on women and child safety, decentralised community composting with BMC.
