Rapist of 12-yr old arrested from Kandivali home

The Charkop Police have arrested a 24-year old man for raping a 12-year old girl, almost two days after her parents discovered she was pregnant. The accused lived close to the victim in Kandivali (W) and visited her regularly.

According to Charkop Police sources, he raped the minor girl several times in her shanty when her parents were not around. Both hail from the same native place and belong to the same community.

Shockingly, the victim's family discovered she is 27 weeks pregnant and they are now planning to seek the Supreme Court's permission to abort. Late last month, the rape survivor was refused an abortion by the top court as doctors believe the procedure would pose a threat to her life.

When cops questioned the victim's family as to why they waited so long to lodge an FIR against the accused (the victim is almost eight months pregnant), they said they didn't realise she is pregnant due to her obesity.

Based on the parents allegation, Charkop Police have registered a case under relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act (POCSO). The accused was produced before the court and remanded to police custody till August 16.

Dr Datar to help
The family is being assisted by Dr Nikhil Datar, whom the family approached  on Wednesday night. A diagnosis revealed that the victim is 27 weeks pregnant. In fact, even her mother didn't know about her pregnancy until a day before. The family, along with the doctor, are waiting to procure all legal documents before approaching the Supreme Court. The final decision will be taken by the court. India does not allow medical terminations after 20 weeks unless there is a threat to the mother's life. In May, the top court allowed a 10-year-old rape victim from Haryana to abort her nearly 21-week old fetus.
