Property tax unpaid, MBMC to stop water!

If you have defaulted on property tax, the counters of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) will no more accept payments towards water bills until you produce your duly-paid property tax receipts. Consequently, your water lines could be snapped.

Alarmed over the extremely slow pace of property tax collections, the MBMC has embarked on an aggressive recovery drive in the region. Apart from other recovery measures including sealing properties, the tax department has started snapping water supply lines to those buildings which have more than 20 per cent defaulters (a society is supposed to ensure that 80 per cent of their members have paid their bills). So far, the MBMC snapped 113 water lines and sealed 112 properties.

With the financial year nearing its end, the MBMC is going all out to recover property tax dues. Averaging Rs.200 crore as the annual revenue generation, official statistics reveal that out of a total of 3.05 lakh assessed properties, 2.53 lakh are residential and 52,487 commercial ones in the twin-city.

At present, the property tax wing of the civic body is far from achieving its target in the current fiscal. While cumulative amounts have also piled up over the last few years, outstandings and recovery through penal tax are major components which occupy a lion’s share in MBMC’s revenue generation towards property tax.

No takers for assets in e-Auction!
Second time in a row, the MBMC’s attempt to auction confiscated properties which belonged to tax defaulters evoked an extremely cold shoulder response from bidders. The civic administration had put up 39 properties of tax defaulters for e-auction held on March 6. But surprisingly, there were again no takers for these properties. An undeterred MBMC will make one more attempt to attract bidders.
