The next time you fall for an online advertisement offering unbelievable discounts on international holiday packages, be sure to cross-verify the credentials of the tour operator or you could become the target of fraudsters.

A 43-year-old woman (name withheld) from Bhayandar learnt it the hard way after she and her colleagues were allegedly duped of Rs 2.71 lakh by a dubious travel operator, under the guise of providing a luxurious holiday package at discounted rates.

In her statement to the police, the complaint who works with a multi-national company, has alleged that she and her colleagues were planning a week-long trip to Singapore and Malaysia. While going through on-line search engines, she came across a Lucknow-based travel operator who offered the desired package at heavily discounted rates. The unsuspecting woman paid a total of Rs 2.71 lakh as advances through multiple transfers in different bank accounts, following which she was mailed booking confirmations of flights, hotels and cruise.

However, upon calling up the establishments, she learnt that the bookings were fake, following which she registered a complaint with the police. Based on the complaint, a FIR under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code was registered, police said.
